3/10/2023 0 Comments My days of mercy castSo it seems like an invisible line-crossing when nonconformist Lucy finds herself making friends with cheerleader-ish Mercy (Mara), who’s on the other side: Her father has agitated for the execution of a mentally disabled man who killed his off-duty longtime police partner. Page and Mara are both excellent, but no amount of good acting can make this lifeless movie good. There’s an uneasy co-existence at such events between the “enemy” camps, with little interaction if little overt hostility. Not gripping, a bit of a slog, and completely unmarkable in nearly every way, “My Days of Mercy” is a fine example of trying to make art, but forgetting to have the substance being it. To coin a Jeremy Jahns quote, “I won’t remember this in T-Minus one day”. The exception is well-intentioned, and the death sentence political question gets you thinking about your own personal stance, but that doesn’t really change that the movie is otherwise lifeless. Last over a hundred minutes, “My Days of Mercy” offers very little that will actually stick in the memory. I think that this isn’t helped by the relationship between Lucy and Mercy feeling remarkably easy, as mentioned above. Whilst well-acted, obviously, I kept on feeling like I could look away and not miss anything. “My Days of Mercy” is that it is remarkably ungripping (which I’m not convinced is even a word). It’s hard to put into words just how easy (for lack of better words) everything feels, and having a serious subject matter as a backdrop doesn’t really make up for that. Obviously, you can still love someone, even if you disagree on certain levels, but when they do eventually start finding the divide to be a stumbling block, it feels forced. Right from the first minute they meet, nothing about their relationship feels like it’s a struggle, which isn’t a good thing given that they’re supposedly on opposite sides of a highly sensitive political discussion. “My Days of Mercy” is a prime example of why I tend not to enjoy movies about lesbian couples, the relationship never feels like it is genuine, and has often formed without much effort from either party, or more importantly, it often comes out the blue. Whilst this is going on, Lucy and Mercy’s relationship develops further. At this point, Mercy says she has a contact who can potentially bring new DNA evidence into the case, giving Lucy hope. Mercy starts making consistent appearances in Lucy’s life, and the two kiss following the latter sharing the story of her father. Lucy spends some time looking for up online, but is soon distracted by her father receiving a date of execution, leaving them just four months to complete the appeal. Upon arrival, she meets Mercy (Mara), who is also there protesting, but on the opposite side of the argument. Lucy (Page) is on her way to protest the death penalty outside of a prison, with one of the main reasons being that her father is on death row. None of the ones I found had been changed to reflect the name change to Elliot Page. He is arguably the most famous transgender acting talent going, certainly in a female-to-male sense, and it will be interesting to see the difference when movies start getting released once he returns to acting following, what I assume, will be the final surgery.Īlso, I apologise for the poster. The movie starts Elliot Page, who came out as transgender a few years back. We’re now halfway through my month of review movies with an LGBTQ+ theme, and I figured it’s about time that I actually review a movie about a lesbian relationship. Stabbing your mother is the reason they’re going to kill your dad!Ĭast: Elliot Page, Kate Mara, Charlie Shotwell,
